Lindsey terminal, Railroad Dock and Small Boat Harbor
Ships tie up at the Alaska Railroad's dock with no tenders, the Seward Chamber of Commerce says. The railroad and Royal Caribbean Group celebrated the opening of a new building there in June 2026, the Dale R. and Carol Ann Lindsey Alaska Railroad Terminal. Their release calls it Alaska's largest cruise terminal, with 41,500 square feet enclosed and a 27,000-square-foot luggage area, and says it replaced dock facilities from the mid-1960s. The Alaska Railroad station is right beside it.
Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska's 2026 schedule codes 47 entries at the Railroad Dock's west side, 27 at its east side and 4 at the freight dock. In the first and last weeks, Viking Venus and Viking Orion were listed on the east side, and Silver Moon, Celebrity Summit, Ovation of the Seas and Luminara on the west. Wikipedia describes the $137 million project's floating dock as 748 feet long.
Most sights lie within 2 miles of the terminal on level ground, the chamber says, and taxis wait outside. Major Marine Tours checks in at the Harbor 360 Hotel, 1412 4th Avenue, 0.6 miles from the terminal. Its free loop shuttle runs every 15 minutes from 7:00 to 9:45 am, but not for the 8:00 am cruise. Kenai Fjords Tours sends a driver to the port when you call. Seward Ocean Excursions boards at slips M1, M3, M5 and M7 in the boat harbor, and Sunny Cove checks guests in at its Adventure Center, listing its address as 1304 B 4th Avenue.
Ships may arrive as early as 5 am and sail as late as 8 pm, Kenai Fjords Tours tells cruise guests, and the 2026 schedule from Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska bears that out. Ovation of the Seas was listed from 5:00 am to 8:00 pm on June 5, and Celebrity Summit from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm on May 29. Silver Moon opened the season on May 28, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Viking Venus stayed from June 5 to June 7, and Viking Orion made the last call on September 30.
Kenai Fjords Tours says US customs clearance here can take up to an hour and advises guests not to count on being ready for a tour before 10 am. Its 11:30 am Classic tour is back at 5:30 pm, which leaves little slack before the 6:00 pm Alaska Railroad train to Anchorage or the 6:30 pm Park Connection coach from the Small Boat Harbor. Seward keeps Alaska time, one hour behind Pacific time.
Anchorage is about 120 miles away, 2.5 to 4 hours by train, coach, car or charter flight, and the chamber tells guests leaving the ship not to plan on reaching the airport before the afternoon. Evening train passengers can check bags at the depot from 10 am. Major Marine tells guests driving from Anchorage to allow 3 to 4 hours in summer for construction and traffic, and it does not refund reservations missed through construction delays.
Aialik and Holgate glaciers, Resurrection Bay and kayaks
Major Marine Tours' 6-hour Kenai Fjords National Park cruise lists 2027 fares of $259 for adults and $129.50 for ages 2 to 11, plus tax and a harbor fee. It includes a deli lunch and visits an active tidewater glacier. Kenai Fjords Tours' Classic tour runs 5.5 to 6 hours to Aialik or Holgate Glacier with a hot lunch, though its page shows no fares. It lists sea otters, Dall's porpoises, puffins and Steller sea lions, and, rarely, black bears on Holgate Arm beaches.
Seward Ocean Excursions never puts more than six guests on a boat. Its 3.5-hour half day costs $209 and often visits Bear Glacier, Cape Resurrection and the Fox, Hive and Rugged islands. The 7-hour Aialik Bay trip for 3 to 6 guests is $419 and reaches Holgate or Aialik Glacier and the Chiswell Islands. Both run May 15 to August 31, and a private 8-hour day for up to six costs $2,866. Kenai Fjords Tours also sells a 4.5-hour Resurrection Bay cruise, 12:30 to 5:00 pm, with a hot lunch.
Sunny Cove Kayaking's Resurrection Bay tour costs $129 plus tax and fees and takes about 3 hours 45 minutes. A narrated van ride goes to the launch beach, and paddlers spend about 2 hours 15 minutes covering 1 to 2 miles. Two-person kayaks, spray skirts, neoprene mitts, waterproof boots, a dry bag and a snack are included. The 7:30 am trip suits ages 8 and up and is usually calmer; the 11:30 am trip, often breezier, suits 12 and up.
Free bag storage, 72-hour refunds and six-guest boats
Kenai Fjords Tours collects cruise guests at the port when they call and keeps their luggage free at its office near the Small Boat Harbor during the tour. A free shuttle then takes them to the Alaska Railroad station. It refunds in full up to 24 hours before departure, and $1 from every ticket goes to the Alaska SeaLife Center. Seward Ocean Excursions cannot carry luggage on its boats and points guests to Dighton Luggage Delivery or Luggage Kab.
Major Marine Tours refunds cruise-only bookings up to 72 hours ahead, minus a 3% card fee, and no-shows forfeit the fare. One date change is free up to 24 hours out, then $15 per person. The company sails rain or shine, and when the captain keeps a full-day park cruise inside Resurrection Bay, it offers a partial refund. Cruise and hotel packages need 7 days' notice, and packages with coach or train transport need 21.
Seward Ocean Excursions takes the full fare at booking. It refunds everything 14 or more days ahead, part inside 14 days and nothing within 24 hours, and it refunds shortened trips pro rata. It offers no whale guarantee. Children of any age are welcome, with life jackets for those under 13, but boarding means climbing over the gunwale and the boats cannot take wheelchairs. Sunny Cove's tour page gives no refund terms.
Watching from shore
Kenai Fjords National Park Visitor Center. The park's visitor center is in the Small Boat Harbor, with exhibits, rangers, ranger-led programs and Junior Ranger activities, and the National Park Service suggests a stop before or after a boat tour.
Mile 0 of the Iditarod Trail. The original Iditarod Trail to Interior Alaska began in Seward, and its Mile 0 is marked on the shoreline at the south end of town.
Seward waterfront path. A paved path runs from downtown along the waterfront and through the harbor, then beside the highway to mile 4.5.
Before you book
Pack warmer than seems necessary. Seward Ocean Excursions asks guests to bring warm clothes and waterproof outer layers, and says rough seas are a likelier reason to cancel than rain.
The terminal has no baggage carts or storage. Local businesses hold bags, and evening train passengers can check luggage at the depot from 10 am.
Add Major Marine's free shuttle at least 24 hours before your cruise. The loop from the cruise terminal runs only from 7:00 to 9:45 am.
Tipping is optional on Seward Ocean Excursions, which says 10 to 20% is customary.
