Pier B behind the Opal Key Resort
Pier B, behind the Opal Key Resort on Front Street, has taken every cruise ship since a city commission resolution of March 10, 2022 closed the city's own two piers to nearly all ships. Pier B Development Corporation runs it under a state lease renewed for 25 years in March 2024. The city-owned Mallory Square Dock, opened in 1984, may now be used only when no ship is at Pier B, and only by ships carrying up to 1,300 people. In 2024 it mainly served American Cruise Lines. The Outer Mole Pier is Navy property leased to the city, and Historic Tours of America shuttles its passengers across the base.
Fury Water Adventures checks guests in at booths on the pier at Opal Key Resort & Marina, 241 Front Street. It puts the walk at about 5 minutes from Pier B and 5 to 10 minutes from Mallory Pier, and says a representative waits on the pier as guests leave the ship. Danger Charters' check-in is the Danger Chandlery Store at the same marina, 255 Front Street, with restrooms in the Dock Master's Office. Old Town Trolley puts its boarding points 200 to 250 yards from Pier B; guests who book through the ship's desk get a boarding pass on the pier.
Getting back onto the pier takes the ship card, which usually doubles as the room key, plus a valid photo ID such as a passport or driver's license, according to Old Town Trolley. Fury asks every guest for government-issued photo ID as well, and anyone under 18 needs a parent at check-in to sign waivers. Mallory Square itself is the plaza beside the cruise port, just west of the northern end of Duval Street.
One ship a day and the two-hours-before-sunset rule
Key West keeps Eastern Time (EST or EDT), the same clock as the Florida home ports, so ship time and island time normally match. The city commission resolved in 2022 to allow one cruise ship a day. WLRN reported in March 2023 that two ships had docked at once on two February days, Ritz-Carlton's Evrima at Mallory and Radiance of the Seas at Pier B. The city manager said those bookings predated the policy and that she had cancelled later overlapping calls at the city pier. Pier B's contract with the city allows up to seven ships a week, including three overnight calls.
A city ordinance passed when the Mallory Square pier opened in 1984 requires cruise ships to leave port two hours before sunset, according to Wikipedia. The same page puts the Sunset Celebration's start at two hours before sunset every day of the year. Cruise Timetables listed calls on 6 days in late October 2026 and 20 days in November, without times. Old Town Trolley's last tour of the day leaves Mallory Square at 4:30 pm, and Fury's parasail slots run from 9 am to 3 pm, then 4:15 and 5:15 pm.
None of the three operators publishes a back-to-ship guarantee. Old Town Trolley states that returning to the ship on time is the guest's responsibility, and that any time spent off the trolley adds to the 1.5-hour loop. Fury's morning snorkel checks in at 9 am, leaves at 9:30 am and runs 3 hours, so it is back around 12:30 pm; its cruise page notes that time in port varies by ship. Danger Charters' 4.5-hour morning trip is the longest of the main tours here, and its pages do not mention cruise passengers at all.
Seven miles out, the Backcountry, the trolley
Fury's Morning Snorkel Trip goes about 7 miles offshore on a 65-foot catamaran: roughly an hour out, an hour in the water and an hour back. Fares run $39 to $59, with ages 4 to 10 at $32 to $43 and children 3 and under free, plus a per-person fuel surcharge added at booking. Guests must be able to swim to use the snorkel gear; non-swimmers stay aboard. Sodas, water and mimosas come out before snorkeling, and draft beer and wine after. Margaritaville at Sea sells its own Double Dip Snorkel Trip at $129.99 per adult for 3.5 hours.
Danger Charters sails into the Key West National Wildlife Refuge, which it says locals call the Backcountry, a stretch of 14 mangrove islands with shallow flats and sandbars. Its morning Sail, Snorkel & Kayak trip lasts 4.5 hours and carries no more than 20 guests. It costs $105 for ages 13 and up, $85 for ages 4 to 12 and nothing for 3 and under. Kayaks, snorkel gear, wine, beer, soft drinks and snacks are included, and wetsuits are provided in the winter months. The company's Key West fleet is four schooners of 48 to 57 ft. A 6.5-hour Premium version with a buffet lunch is $144.
Old Town Trolley's narrated loop takes about 1.5 hours with 13 stops and all-day reboarding, from $50.30 online. Margaritaville at Sea lists the same tour at $99.99 per adult and $59.99 per child, and warns that some attractions need a separate ticket and not every stop is wheelchair accessible. The 60-minute Conch Tour Train from the same company starts at $40.80. Fury's parasail flight lasts about 8 to 10 minutes at roughly 300 ft, after a 5-minute boat ride 1 to 2 miles offshore; the whole slot is about an hour. The 9 am early-bird flight is $59.95, later slots $60 to $85, against $149.99 through Margaritaville at Sea.
Swimmers only, 72-hour cutoffs and no guarantees
Fury Water Adventures refunds cancellations made at least 24 hours before departure; later cancellations and anything booked inside 24 hours are charged in full. A paid Reservation Refund Protection add-on allows changes up to an hour before departure, though its own fee is not refundable. If the captain cancels a parasail for weather, guests can reschedule or take a voucher. Gratuity is not included, and groups of 8 or more pay an automatic gratuity of at least 10%. Parasail flights carry a 450 lb total limit and take riders aged 6 and up with an adult.
Danger Charters, which says it has been locally owned since 1993, sets its cancellation deadline by party size. Parties of 4 or fewer must cancel 24 hours ahead, 5 or more 72 hours ahead, and private charters 15 days ahead. No-shows and late cancellations are not refunded, but a trip the company cancels brings a reschedule or a full refund. Rebooking inside 24 hours costs $30 per person and is allowed once. Its Trip Protection add-on permits cancellation up to 30 minutes before departure. Departures from the Danger Chandlery are usually flat calm, the company says, and a 15% code (FALLSAIL15) was running on the morning trip in October 2026.
Old Town Trolley is the only one of the three to address ship timing, and only to say it is the guest's responsibility. The same tour is sold through cruise line excursion desks, where the company says additional fees may apply: Margaritaville at Sea charges $99.99 against the $50.30 online price. Historic Tours of America, which runs the trolley and the Conch Tour Train, is also the company that shuttles Outer Mole passengers into town under a contract paying the city 5% of its revenue.
Watching from shore
Mallory Square Sunset Celebration. Street performers, craft stalls and food carts gather on the plaza beside the cruise port from two hours before sunset every day. The same Wikipedia page records the ordinance that sends cruise ships out two hours before sunset, so most passengers see only the setup.
Key West Historic Memorial Sculpture Garden. On Mallory Square, with 39 bronze busts of people from the island's history and a 20-foot monument called The Wreckers.
Before you book
Carry the ship card and a government photo ID ashore; Old Town Trolley says adults need both to get back onto the pier, and Fury asks for photo ID from every guest at check-in.
Fury's snorkel gear is for swimmers only, and under-18s need a parent at check-in to sign waivers. A per-person fuel surcharge is added at booking and gratuity is extra.
Danger Charters provides wetsuits free in winter and suggests a sweatshirt and soft-soled shoes. Small coolers are allowed on board, but no glass.
Parasail riders must weigh no more than 450 lb in total per flight (single, tandem or triple), and triple flights depend on the day's weather, according to Fury.
Booked directly, Fury's 3-hour morning snorkel starts at $39 and its parasail at $59.95, and Old Town Trolley's one-day pass starts at $50.30 online. Danger Charters charges $105 per adult for its morning sail, snorkel and kayak trip. Margaritaville at Sea lists its trolley excursion at $99.99, parasailing at $149.99 and a two-reef snorkel at $129.99 per adult.
Which pier will my ship use in Key West?
Nearly every ship docks at the privately run Pier B. Since a March 2022 city resolution, the city's Mallory Square pier takes only ships carrying up to 1,300 people, and only when Pier B is empty. Celebrity Cruises says the Navy Mole has a shuttle trolley into town, while the other two piers sit within easy walking distance of shops and sights.
